PLY | ERS / Burlap / Clever on their tag-team tour shenanigans

By Unbelievably Bad Staff
PlyersBurlapClever_Poster.jpgPLY | ERS from Melbourne, Burlap from Sydney and Clever from Brisbane will traverse highways and tread boards together this weekend. It’s a kind of tag-team tour that’ll take in four dates in three cities and culminate in a big Saturday night show with all three bands visiting The Phoenix in Canberra.

UB asks PLY | ERS, Burlap and Clever how they’ll travel, where they’ll stop, and what they’ll listen to…

PLY | ERS (Melbourne)

You have some solid travelling hours ahead. How are things likely to unfold? How do you stave off boredom?
Boredom is the makings of a poor attitude. It holds humanity back. I think things will probably kick of in high fashion, following a brief slide-show of all the recent photos Matt has taken of his dog, a debate will preside over who has brought the best scroggin mix for the trip and why – “it’s all about dried fig”. At some point a deep seeded techno odyssey will likely unfold. We have all been stoked on the new Elizabeth Dixon record, so that will definitely get some rep on the way. Also recently downloaded Melbourne Water’s Frog Census app, which allows you to identify different frog species by their calls, so no doubt that will be getting a solid workout.

You’ll have to stop at least once along the way… where and what for?
Holbrook is a small town in southern New South Wales, Australia. It is on the Hume Highway, 384 kilometres by road northeast of Melbourne and 492 kilometres by road southwest of Sydney between Tarcutta and Albury. The district is renowned for its local produce, including merino wool, wheat and other grains, lucerne, cattle and lamb. More importantly, the town plays host to the historic HMAS Otway, an Oberon class submarine purchased through a community fundraiser in June 1997 as a tribute to Lieutenant Holbrook (the town’s namesake). Upon a prior band visit to Sydney with Orlando Furious I was enlightened as to the good tidings the submarine brings for any band/musician making the Melbourne-Sydney pilgrimage. The extent of which determined by the offering of used beer cans to the submarine’s hull by the town’s youth. Orlando would know; the guy gets around. Not only will we be paying our respects here but – being the Melbourne tragics we are – we are also hoping to accurately align this with a viewing of the Grand Final in the local pub. It will be a crucial time.

If you only had two CDs to play in your car over the whole four days, what would they be?
I was leaning towards the two-CD bonus edition of The Twelfth Man’s This Is Your Life in which cricketing sensation Bill Lawry makes a guests appearance on Mike Munro’s This Is Your Life TV show. However, Mathew and Riley shunned the idea and this was left behind for the following, which in hindsight I think was a good idea (somewhat).

If there were two other bands /artists you could bring along from your city, who?
If we could take Jay (Halt Ever, POLO, Subjects) and AL of DIVIDER with us everywhere we went – like just tuck them away and have them around for life’s quandaries – we would. Their music is also great, one of our local favourites. Australia is one of the driest inhabited continents in the world. The east coast could simply prosper from more Waterfalls (and its Waterfall Person).

This time round, how will things be different?
Hopefully more leg room…Barinas are great and all but they are not without their drawbacks when you’re 6ft+. Generally speaking we are simply stoked we get to do a few shows with Burlap and Clever. They are two of the more compelling bands in Australia right now. We are also stoked as to how these shows have come together. We have been stoked on bands like Ill Winds, Frame 313, Marcus WhaleAloha Units, Melt and Agency for some time, so to get to play with them will be great. It will also be great to see some old friends and hopefully make a few new ones.

Burlap (Sydney)

You have some solid travelling hours ahead. How are things likely to unfold? How do you stave off boredom?
We’ll probably spend a fair chunk of our travel time making memes. Nothing TOO spicy, though. We got in trouble last time.

You’ll have to stop at least once along the way… where and what for?
Travelling to and from Melbourne we will check out the Big Apple (Batlow), The Big Bicycle (Chullora), The Big Cheese (Bodalla), The Big Funnel Web (Jamberoo), The Big Merino (Goulburn), The Big Potato (Robertson) and The Big Trout (Adaminaby) are a few on the itinerary. To be honest, we copped out this time and decided to fly the Melbourne leg, but we’ll try and spot these things from the plane. Travelling to and from Canberra we will check out the Giant Mushroom and the Giant Owl.

If you only had two CDs to play in your car over the whole four days, what would they be?
Go-Betweens
Liberty Belle: Can’t really go wrong with any Go-Betweens for a long drive. Interesting side note; I once spent a year doing a stupid music course at TAFE. On the whole I found it to be a waste of time except for one class that was taught by Lindy Morrison from Go-Betweens. One day I told her that I had just bought a second hand vinyl copy of Liberty Belle, to which she replied flatly, “Oh good. It’s a great album.” I don’t know what else I expected her to say really. “Head Full of Steam”:

Taylor SwiftSpeak Now: It’s impossible to choose a favourite Taylor Swift album, but Speak Now has “Enchanted”. Some member(s) of the band will be enjoying this more than others for sure. “Enchanted”:

If there were two other bands /artists you could bring along from your city, who?
Canine
: Without a doubt the most ripping punk band any of us have seen in recent years. They switch from laughably fast hardcore to honest-to-god riff rockers on a dime and it makes my head explode every time. We’re sweating pretty hard on the debut album that we’re told they’re working on.
Whitney Houston’s Crypt: Although they’re all Novocastrians at heart I think we’re calling Whitney Houston’s Crypt a Sydney band now… When it’s convenient. Like how Russell Crowe is ‘our Russ’ except when he’s been a cunt and then he’s New Zealand’s problem. Anyway, we love Whitney Houston’s Crypt. Beautiful people who make some exceptionally ugly music. Ugly in a good way. Or The Vines just to see what would happen.

This time round, how will things be different?
Our last tour was much longer, more van hours. So I anticipate that this time around we’ll still be enjoying each other’s company at the end of it. That’ll be nice. Also, hopefully I don’t get food poisoning this time. Going to try and eat more Maxibons too, Burlap’s travel treat of choice.

Clever (Brisbane)

You have some solid travelling hours ahead. How are things likely to unfold? How do you stave off boredom?
Cutting a hole in the floor of the car that everyone can gather round. It’s like being one of those boats with the see-through bottom but instead of stingrays and Nemos it’s dead kangaroos and lizards.

You’ll have to stop at least once along the way… where and what for?
Wallen Wallen Creek is the oldest known archaeological site in the Moreton region dating back to around 20,000 years BP. Shows good evidence of changing coastal subsistence strategies, esp in the mid-to-late Holocene when fishing became the economic focus. Ned Kelly was born there, the master and chief of Joe Byrne our own Harry Byrne’s cheeky blood relation. Go to Kew and get a Far Kew shirt from the servo.

If you only had one or two CDs to play in your car over the whole four days, what would they be?
Tool
for the very most part. They are the beginning and the end. “Opiate”, their first album is their ‘book of genesis’ and one hell of a big bang:

Captain Beefheart and the blurring trees and dust and cans of V. As we roll into your town we gonna make the paint run, run. Doc at the Radar Station:

If there were two other bands /artists you could bring along from your city, who?
Bent
: Have probably played more shows with these wack jobs than anyone else so more for comfortability purposes than anything. Heidi from Bent appears on new release out on Paradise Daily and it does go off!
Piss Pain/Hexmere: The better of the up and comings that have sprung up in Brisbane in the near past.

This time round, how will things be different?
“It’ll be different this time because it’s different every time. Every moment anyone experiences is a brand spanking new thing. Everything is unique and beautiful. I learned that from a guy who has a glowing, pink, salt lamp.”
