After 26 years, Aussie grind and death rock impuritans Blood Duster will hang up their tracksuits with a couple of sold-out shows in Melbourne on Friday and Saturday night. The recent hectic pace of one show a year got the better of them and they’re calling it a day.

“Our natural inclination as a band was to do the opposite of what people wanted,” read a statement from Blood Duster’s propaganda department. “Sometimes that lost us fans, but we could always look at ourselves and know we did the right thing for all the wrong reasons.”

Fittingly, a new bitsa compilation LP, …All The Remains, has been released in time for the final show. Hipsters have already cleaned the band out of the coloured versions, but there’s copies of the black one left at bandcamp.

In preparing to bring down the curtain, Blood Duster compiled a list of career highlights that included ‘Telling James Hetfield, “Sorry, we are totally out of merch.”’; ‘Peeing in a guy’s mouth’; and ‘Getting treated like shit by Slayer and Chopper Read coming to our defence.’ They also recorded with original AC/DC singer and self-anointed ‘King of All Baddasses’, Dave Evans, and the bloke from 28 Days. Neither activity got a mention in their death notice.

UB spoke with bass player and lead herder at Goatsound, Jason PC, to reflect on 26 years of fisting the dead and calling things cunt.

Best thing about naming an album Cunt?
That we managed to convince a record label and distributes that it was a good idea for all involved.

Worst thing about naming an album Cunt?
I don’t see a downside.

Who’s the biggest cunt the band encountered in its 26 years?
There are way too many, mostly promoters. Sometimes all the people.

How did Cole Clark get involved in making a ‘Cunt’ guitar and what happened to it? It was on eBay at one stage.
Our guitarists didn’t understand the word endorsement and Cole Clark moved away from us. Pretty quickly actually. One is here, the other is out there somewhere.

How many record players were ruined because of Kvlt after the master was scratched to shit?
Dunno if many people even bothered to play it… Fuck ’em if they broke ’em.

What’s the story about coming close to punching Danzig? Everyone seems to have one.
He was starting shit with my wife after she took a photo of his bald spot, and I had to stand in between him as he berated her onstage. I should have just fucking knocked him out… a definite missed opportunity.

What’s everyone doing post Blood Duster?
I’m doing a sixties-styled instrumental surf band called the Birdcage and a doom rock thing called the Ruiner. Tony is doing a modern black metal thing called King and Rizzo has a new band called Womb to Tomb I think. Matt Collins has a band called Onne… If I had to rate them all on a scale of one to 10, I would give my bands a 10 out of 10 and they would all rate their bands a one out of 10. True story.

Console yourself with …All The Remains:

Blood Duster play their final shows at The Tote on Friday, Corner on Saturday, both already sold out.
